In 1831, the composer became acquainted with the tragedy “Norma” by Soumet and Belmont. The pathos of the liberation struggle and the hatred towards the oppressors resonated with his ideas and artistic vision, prompting him to compose an opera based on its сюжет. Bellini asked Felice Romani to write the libretto and actively participated in its creation himself.
