This is one of the well-preserved buildings from the Bulgarian National Revival period in Varna. Built in 1862 to serve the needs of the first Bulgarian school, the building is located in a large courtyard, typical of Varna houses from that time.
In 1865, the ground floor of the school was converted into a small church named St. Archangel Michael. This was the first church in Varna where services were given in Bulgarian language. On 17 February 1866, a Holy Divine Liturgy was given there by Priest Konstantin Dunovski, the first Bulgarian priest in Varna.
Although St. Archangel Michael church was opened in 1865, it was consecrated much later, on 21 November 1938, by Metropolitan Yosif of Varna and Preslav Holy Metropolis.
In the same building, in 1870, thanks to the initiative of Yanko Slavchev, Konstantin Tyulev, and Dimitar Stanchev, the Bulgarians established their own public and cultural center "Vazrazhdane", On 27 July 1878, the Bulgarian population welcomed the Russian liberating army with bread and salt in the courtyard of the school and the church. In commemoration of this event, a monument to the Russian liberators was erected in the courtyard of today’s church.
