"St. Athanasius" church is the former metropolitan church of Varna. It is located near the Roman Thermal Baths, within the historic heart of Varna. In its present form, the church was built in 1838 on the site of an earlier temple that had burned down two years before. It was in 1939 that the church came under the care of the Bulgarian Orthodox clergy. Later, on January 18, 1991, it was once again established as a parish church.
The building is a three-nave basilica with an open narthex and rich interior decoration, notable are the woodcarving of the iconostasis, the bishop’s throne, and the ceiling.
The church celebrates its feast on January 18.
