A story of painting as a physical journey and spiritual cartography, presented at Sofia’s new art space “Monument” and Varna’s Papillon Art Gallery.
In February, Bulgarian audiences will have the opportunity to experience the art of Rada Tsankova - an artist whose work builds bridges between East and West, between the visible world of nature and the invisible realm of memory. The retrospective exhibition “The Spirit of the Signs” will be presented in Sofia (17 February, “Monument” space) and Varna (23 February, Papillon Art Gallery).
“I chose this as the title of my retrospective exhibition in Bulgaria because these two words express an essential part of who I am - both as a person and as an artist on my journey from Bulgaria to France.”
Trained at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studio of Jean-Michel Alberola, Tsankova does not simply paint landscapes - she lives them, traveling across the world in search of place, light, and memory. Her technique, combining the delicate precision of an engraver’s line with the airy grace of classical Chinese painting, transforms the blank canvas into a field of energy. Each of her gestures is a kind of “walking through the mist” - rhythmic, pulsating, and deeply sincere.
Recognition and Return
Winner of prestigious awards - including the Institut de France Painting Prize (2024) - Rada Tsankova returns home to share her “inner fire.” Supported by the European Union, the project presents an artist whose authentic work has made a meaningful contribution to contemporary European culture.
