The traditional swimming marathon "Galata - Varna" has become an emblematic sporting event for the city. The event is open to all citizens and guests of Varna, aged 12, from all over the world. This is the oldest swimming competition of its kind in our country. It has been held every year since 1939, with no start only in 1944 due to the political events of that time. The founders of the swimming marathon were Eng. Georgi Burnev, Eng. Vasil Kardzhiev and the lawyer Demirdzhiev, who were the first to swim the distance from Galata to Varna (about 4000 m) on August 14, 1914.
