According to historical data this church was built in 1602. During its construction, it was discovered that an earlier temple had once stood on the same site.
A distinctive feature of the church is that it was built partially underground. At the time, regulations prohibited Christian churches from rising more than two meters above ground level.
Another notable characteristic of the church is its icons. Contrary to traditional church writings and canons, the faces of the icons are oriented toward the south rather than the west. Experts consider the icons housed in the temple to be a great cultural and artistic treasure.
