From November 11 to November 30, 2026, the Boris Georgiev City Art Gallery in Varna presents the exhibition "Digital Collages" by Prof. Plamen Bratanov, marking his 70th birthday. The exhibition features experimental works measuring 100 x 70 cm, created over the last decade—with the most recent pieces dating back just one month. The origins of this work can be traced back to a 2012 series of large-format drawings titled "Transtemporal Abstractions," exhibited at the same Varna gallery. Those works utilized various forms of graphite—powdered, solid blocks, and water-soluble graphite. Even then, the artist—a respected sculptor and painter—was exploring the potential of this familiar material and how it could be pushed beyond the boundaries of traditional drawing.
However, digital techniques do not replace classical media in Plamen Bratanov’s practice. He describes this new direction as a parallel pursuit—a space for curiosity and experimentation that could potentially evolve into something more enduring. "At heart, I remain a classical artist and sculptor; I draw in the traditional way. With this line of work, I am primarily seeking to satisfy my own curiosity. But then again, who knows—perhaps something more lasting might emerge from it."
