The Palace of Culture and Sports is a multifunctional complex located in a central area of Varna, the maritime capital of Bulgaria. It is one of the city’s key landmarks and has established itself over the years as a primary venue for cultural events, sports competitions, exhibitions, and conferences. Its extensive experience, well-developed facilities, and professional team have enabled the institution to contribute to the city’s cultural and sporting life for many years.
Historical Reference
Construction of the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna began on 28 October 1966. The deadline for completing the building, which was considered a large-scale project for its time, was set at less than two years. This deadline was met, and the architectural landmark opened its doors on 17 September 1968 with the hosting of the 56th session of the International Dental Federation.
Architectural Description
The building impresses with its innovative and avant-garde architectural design. The Palace is a multifunctional complex comprising a main hall, corridors, conference and training rooms, changing rooms, and commentator booths. The overall concept is based on a circular plan, with a roof shaped in two directions – the technical term is a hyperbolic paraboloid. The load-bearing ring of its membrane rests on sculptural columns, creating the illusion of the building floating in the air.
Significance and Development
The unique building of the Palace of Culture and Sports hosts sports, cultural and business events of all levels. Its vast spatial volume, excellent sightlines, and distinctive appearance make the Palace one of the most functional arenas in the world. A building modeled on its design was later constructed in Lagos, Nigeria, with the same lead architect, Stefan Kolchev.
Eighteen years after its opening, the Palace required an expansion of its sports facilities. The renovation took one year and was completed in 1987. The reopening was marked by the hosting of the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.
Cultural and National Significance
The Palace of Culture and Sports – Varna has hosted numerous prestigious and city-defining events, including over seventy festivals, European and world championships, congresses, exhibitions, performances, and concerts. The building is one of the most outstanding achievements of contemporary Bulgarian architecture. It has rightfully become a symbol of the city of Varna and possesses all the qualities necessary to be recognized as part of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage.
Renovation of the Congress Hall
On 20 November 2014, the renovation of the “Congress Hall” at the Palace of Culture and Sports commenced. The investment for the project amounted to BGN 9.7 million. The interior space was completely refurbished while preserving the hall’s authentic appearance and acoustics. All installations and the entire internal infrastructure, which had been heavily worn, were reconstructed. Another key element of the refurbishment was the enhancement of the building’s fire and emergency safety systems, as well as improvements to the seating, sightlines, and electrical installation.
