Varna was officially proclaimed a seaside resort on June 10, 1921. Its natural resources and the efforts of many notable figures made it a leading international destination.
At the turn of the 20th century, Varna’s establishments were places to exchange news and gossip, hold business meetings, socialize, and enjoy games like cards and backgammon.
The first hotels in Varna were small private homes. By 1900 there were 12 hotels, and after Varna became a seaside resort, modern hotels with luxury amenities began to appear.
At the turn of the 20th century, Varna’s seashore was a place for romantic walks, where ladies wore hats, carried umbrellas, and dressed in long-sleeved attire.
Varna’s central sea baths, built 1925-1926 by Czech company Pitel Brauzeveter east of the Aquarium, had 2 floors, ~1,000 cabins, a pool, and 66 hot tubs.
