In the heart of the city stands the Church "St. Nicholas the Thaumaturge" - the only church in Bulgaria officially recognised as a maritime church. Built in 1865, it is deeply intertwined with Varna’s history and the lives of generations of sailors, fishermen and seafarers.
Every year on 6 December, the church becomes one of the main venues for the celebrations honouring St. Nicholas. Traditional religious services and rituals serve as a reminder of the centuries-old bond between the city and the sea.
On 05 December 2026, Varna will once again host the charitable culinary festival "Let’s Share Nikulden", organised by the Varna Chamber of Tourism in partnership with Varna Municipality and the Bulgarian Association for Culinary Culture.

The event brings together professional chefs, young culinary talents and food lovers, offering a celebration of good food and community spirit. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample a variety of fish specialities, enjoy the festive atmosphere and support a charitable cause.
St. Nicholas Day (Nikulden) is inseparably linked to the tradition of a festive meal, with fish taking centre stage. A special place in Bulgarian customs is reserved for carp, often stuffed and oven-baked to perfection.
In Varna, the celebration also brings the distinctive flavours of the Black Sea to the table. Freshly prepared bonito, fragrant horse mackerel, traditional fish soup and salted fish are just some of the local delicacies that form part of the city’s rich culinary heritage.
A glass of locally produced wine makes the perfect accompaniment to these fish specialities. The Northern Black Sea Coast has a long-standing wineproducing tradition and is renowned for its fresh, aromatic white wines, which pair beautifully with seafood and fish dishes.
In this way, St. Nicholas Day becomes a celebration of flavours, bringing people together around the table
