The Varna Municipality building is monumental in style. Built in 1981, it was originally designed to house the city and district committees of the Communist Party and Komsomol.
The original project was designed by architects Galina Peteva, Todorichka Petkova, and Angel Angelov. Later, the building was renovated by a team led by architect Stefan Kolchev.
The building’s monumental form makes a strong impression, with a balanced composition between its tallest central volume and secondary sections. This effect is reinforced by sculpted concrete walls and aluminum and thermo glass windows. Inside, white concrete is combined with marble and other materials, while prominent panels feature monumental paintings by Vanko Ouroumov, mounted on colorful ceramics.
In 1995, a monument of Icarus was placed to the left of the building’s central entrance, symbolizing freedom and the human spirit. It was created by local sculptor Alyosha Kafedjiiski.
