On 8 October 1934, at the initiative of Karel Skorpil, Director of Varna Archaeological Museum, a decision was made to transform the area near Asparuh’s Rampart into a park and to erect monuments to the Asparuh warrior and Khan Asparuh. An organizing committee was established to oversee the project. The concept for the park was developed by Anton Novak, creator of the Sea Garden, together with Engineer Lyubin Dimov, with key support of Petar Dimkov, commander of the Eighth Coastal Regiment.
In early 1935, the development of the park’s entrance began with the construction of a special gate and one hundred meters away from it, at the very beginning of the rampart, a bust monument of Khan Asparuh was placed on a specially designed pedestal. The monument was created by the Varna sculptor Kiril Georgiev.
Later the same year, a large sculpture of an Asparuh warrior was erected at the center of the rampart. The sculpture is depicted in full battle armor, facing the sea. It was created by the prominent Varna artist Kiril Shivarov. A column dating from the Asparuh era, discovered during excavations by the Skorpil brothers in 1914, was placed next to the pedestal.
Today, Asparuhovo Park is a wonderful place for relaxation and leisure. Its walkways are paved and equipped with elegant benches, while the trees and shrubs are decorated with attractive lighting effects.
