Due to its environmental protection and ecological importance, in 1977 the area was included in the global network of biosphere reserves as a part of the program “Human and Biosphere” of UNESCO for protection of the most representative ecological systems on the planet. In the reserve there are 245 higher plant species to be found, 258 bird species as well. Several rare birds for Bulgaria and Europe breed in here. This is also one of the Via Pontica stops – a bird migration route.
The “Longoz” forests are of great importance for the nature reserve formed by the period floodings of Kamchia river. The swamp territories along the river valley as well as the longoz type forests are considered a natural humid zone on the Black Sea Coast. Floodings occur mainly in spring.
