The Park-Memorial of Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship was originally designed as a monument to the Soviet Army. It stands atop Turna Tepe, in the northernmost part of Varna, at 110 m above sea level. At 23 m high and 48 m wide, it is the largest monument in the Varna area.
The monument is the largest in the Varna area. Its open composition combines two dynamic forms. Varna sculptors Alyosha Kafedzhiiski and Eugene Barumov created the colossal figures—four soldiers for the north wing and three women for the south.
A staircase of 301 steps, known as the Staircase of Victory, leads from the base of Turna Tepe to its top. Including the park alleys, the total number of steps exceeds 2,400. At the hill’s base, a 22-meter-high memorial wall bears bronze inscriptions detailing the historic ties between the Bulgarian and Russian peoples from 1774 to 1994. The Park-Memorial was solemnly inaugurated on November 13, 1978.
